Using the Quick Pose to Create Character Portraits

Spend an intensive two day workshop learning the basics of creating innovative and exciting pastel portraits from quick pose studies. Students will be working from a live model to develop quick pose sketches that will be used to create character portraits.

Students will learn:

  • How to develop an approach to drawing quick pose portraits in three to five minutes
  • Basic portrait proportions
  • Simple approaches in rendering the eyes, nose and mouth in pastel
  • How to block in a portrait in with two and three values
  • Working from live models
  • Developing character pastel portraits from quick pose sketches
  • Key components to look for in value mapping the portrait
  • Critique sessions and open discussions

This workshop will assist students in obtaining a certain level of confidence in their ability to paint portraits and working with the quick pose that will improve their overall painting ability.

Supplies:

Pastels:

  • 431 Steel Gray Canson Pastel Paper
  • Pastels (starter sets for portraits would work fine )
  • Pastel support/drawing board for 11”x 14” paper
  • Kneaded eraser
  • Copy Paper 11” x 17” or 8 ½” x 14”
  • Carbothello Pastel Pencils Black 1400/730, Caput Martuum Red 1400/645 and Bistre 1400/635

Oils:

  • Medium filburt, flat and round brushes for oil
  • Transparent Oxide Red, Yellow Ochre, Ultramarine Blue, Titanium White, Ivory Black
  • Gamsol
  • Copy Paper 11” x17” or 8 ½” x 14”
  • 8” x 10” canvas
  • Lots of patience….free from Beemanstudios

Mike Beeman is a signature member of both the Pastel Society of America, the Pastel Society of Colorado, and also belongs to the Pastel Society of the Northern Rockies. He has been has been a finalist in the Top 100 annual competition in the Pastel Journal's Magazine for 2005 and 2007.
